Internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Hpung Mai Yang in Injangyang Township, Kachin State have relocated to a new IDP camp in morning of July 23 after taking temporary shelter at the Kachin Baptist Convention (KBC)’s branch office in Waingmaw Township.

The new camp has been built in Madain Village outside Waingmaw town and 364 IDPs have been relocated to the camp.

The IDPs’ head Chawzang Hkawng Dai said the IDPs had to relocate from the KBC office after staying there for over two months due to complications in long-term stay.

“It’s not convenient for them since there are many people. There is limited space and it is worse for large families. Also, the IDPs couldn’t stay there since it was the office of KBC Waingmaw Township. That’s why a separate camp has been built for the IDPs,” he said.

The new IDP camp is built on the land owned by Waingmaw Township Behtela Kachin Baptist Convention and the KBC Waingmaw Township took charge in building the camp.

The IDPs were temporary sheltered at the KBC Waingmaw Township office on May 17 due to heavy fighting between the Tatmadaw and the Kachin Independence Army in Injangyang Township.
