Villagers in Halockhani, a Mon internally displaced person (IDP) village in southeast Burma, held an opening ceremony for a new hospital on January 26, 2016.

The hospital was built by a Swedish group Varma Handen in cooperation with the Mon National Health Committee after significant fundraising efforts by the Swedes.

During Burma Link’s visit to the IDP village in December 2015, the clinic was collapsing. The villagers, who had no choice but to cross the border to Thailand every time they needed a doctor, are now excited that the hospital has turned over a new leaf.

Varma Handen also donated the village two wheelchairs, one for the hospital and one for Nai Win Halyit, who has suffered from polio since he was four years old. The Swedes learned about Nai Win Halyit and his desire for a wheelchair after reading about him in an article authored by Ariana Zarleen, a co-founder of Burma Link.
